The application for new passport can be submitted at anytime, even if the previous one is still valid.
When applying for a new passport, the previous, still valid passport must be presented to the authority in charge. The previous passport will be invalidated when applying for a new passport, however, upon request, it can be returned for travel until the new document is issued; in the case of the latter the new passport can only be collected in person, in order to invalidate the old one which must be presented at the collection of the new document.
The used or expired emergency travel documents must be submitted at our Office.
If you cannot present your still valid passport, you must give your written statement at our Office about its whereabouts (stolen, lost or damaged).
Replacement of a passport: issuing a travel document to replace a lost, stolen or destroyed travel document issued by the passport authority, containing the same information as the previous travel document within its period of validity, except for the document identification data and the date of issue.
Passports can only be replaced online. The application for a replacement passport can be submitted if the passport to be replaced was applied for after 1 January 2013 and the applicant has consented to the storage of his/her fingerprint data or the fingerprint data has not been recorded for a reason prescribed by law. The procedure is free of charge if the replacement is due to the theft of the previous passport. Shipping to your address in Hungary is free of charge. If you wish to collect your replacement passport at our Office, a consular administration fee (45 EUR) needs to be paid when collecting your document.
Passports applied for at our Office are issued in Hungary. Procedure time depends on how you wish to receive the document i.e.
- either delivered to Hungary or abroad and
- collected in person or sent to you by post.
Should the passport be collected in Hungary or be delivered to a Hungarian address, our Office has no further duty with the document. The passport authority will deliver the document directly to the requested address.
Should you request the passport to any of the foreign missions of Hungary (other than Taipei), the passport will be sent to the foreign mission you chose by diplomatic courier after the passport authority forwarded the document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary. The duration of such transfers is not included in the legal deadline of the procedure.
